No Harmony At UKAFTA
November 19, 2008
So the UK Adult Film And TV Awards (UKAFTA) will soon be upon us, and once again we’re looking at the messy design of the website and the disorganized voting and nomination system and asking ourselves if these people can actually pull off a successful awards ceremony.
Every year we approach the Awards night with an open mind, of course pulling together such an event is no easy task and really I don’t envy anyone who is in the position of trying to make this event a success, especially now after the past two years of disorganization and rumours of vote rigging, but remaining optimistic becomes increasingly difficult when you see just how chaotic the nominations and voting procedure has been this year.
Just looking at the UKAFTA website to make my vote, I noticed some categories had no nominees, some had only one nominee (Such as the Best Online Paysite category in which Strictly Broadband is the only runner – cross your fingers for us because this might actually mean we’ve a chance of getting a prize this year) and on several of the performer categories (Best Female Actress and Best Male Actor) some performers are listed twice on the voting form – how this will affect their chances we can’t predict, but in the light of various accusations that flew around last year regarding fixed voting, you have thought the organisers would have endeavoured to make the voting as watertight as possible this year.
It was also bough to my attention this week that Harmony Films do not appear to be nominated in any categories. This is a major oversight, Harmony are one of the UK’s biggest and arguably most successful studios, they’ve picked up awards at almost every other ceremony going including the AVN’s.
In a statement published on the UK Adult Producers site, Jason from Harmony told how he’d sent over a list of nominations from the studio weeks ago, but they’d not made it up on the site yet. They still aren’t there, despite the fact that the awards night is tomorrow.
I will point out, without comment, that although no Harmony title make an appearance in the Best Film category, two of Marino’s titles do. And guess whose been posting all over industry forums talking about how he’s helping organise this years show? Well, it’s certainly not anyone from Harmony Films.
I believe it’s a sign there’s something tragically wrong in the UK industry if our finest talent have to look overseas for recognition of their success, and if we can’t manage an awards show without it all appearing corrupt and chaotic. As always, the night will be a fun one (hopefully not a hungry one this year!) and it’s always amazing to see the industry out in force, but I’m sure there’ll be a lot of questions that need answering once the winners are announced.
